Military officials are currently conducting an extensive search across a large area of ocean for a U.S. Marine who went missing last week from a San Diego-based amphibious transport dock ship while participating in naval training off the coast of Southern California, according to a Navy spokesperson.
The search operation commenced shortly after 1:20 a.m. on Thursday, following the report of the Marine’s disappearance, the Navy stated in a news release on Saturday evening. The announcement revealed that multiple military branches — Navy, Marine Corps, Air Force, and Coast Guard — collaborated in a 43-hour search covering approximately 2,400 miles, involving three ships and 12 aircraft.
As of 9 p.m. on Friday, the Navy indicated that the search and rescue phase had transitioned to search and recovery operations.
The Marine was assigned to the USS Anchorage during a training mission between the San Diego-based Makin Island Amphibious Ready Group and the 13th Marine Expeditionary Unit.
Officials have not disclosed the circumstances surrounding the Marine’s overboard incident. The Marine’s identity will be withheld until 24 hours after family notifications are made.
“Our thoughts and prayers are with the family and all those affected during this challenging time,” stated the Navy.
