  10. I've lived here for 35+ years. There is a disappearing middle class and major gentrification in most of long beach and lakewood. That is one of the biggest issues. Then too many people in general, its very VERY crowded. The mayor of LB, Garcia, made it really bad when he was in office. The city continually throws money which disappears somewhere, and businesses closing. The taxes went up excessively (10%+). Crime is scary. You cannot walk along the beach except during the bright bright daylight. Lock up everything in your car, watch your back. Even the nice area of naples had someone stabbed in the middle of the day due to the druggies and homeless. Mental health isn't gonna do squat unless they place them somewhere else. Driving anywhere in North Long Beach is like a lesson in how to swerve away from either people begging for money with scam signs about a funeral OR dodging a crackhead.

    East LB is full of rich kids who work at "space beach." It has made the once affordable sub 400k homes sell now for over 1.2 million. Absurdity. Locals cannot afford to live here anymore unless they are lucky and inherit a home. A studio apartment is $2500k now… The apartments near CSULB which used to be affordable to some extent for students and local workers, and were $1500 for a two bedroom not THAT long ago are now $3k.

But Long Beach is beautifully diverse, the weather is amazing, and people treat each other very well. Yes, home prices are insane. Yes we have homeless but so does every other large city in the U.S. if you’re smart and pay attention to your surroundings you’re generally fine. That’s important almost anywhere these days. There’s definitely things to be fixed but I definitely feel safe even in downtown which a lot of people say is dangerous.

  24. I used to live there 5 years ago. I was by the beach and had a studio apartment for $725.00 a month.

  31. I have lived in Long Beach for the past 6 years, and I hope to be gone by the end of next year. The city is too crowded, the soft-on-crime laws mean criminals get away with everything, there is no real plan in place to address homelessness, housing is becoming increasingly more difficult to find, and crime seems to rise every month. We need a mayor who is actually willing to get their hands dirty and address the problems in the city rather than pretend they don't exist while making pretty promises along the way.

  33. Many decades ago, I used to live not far from Long Beach when I was a child. I thought things were dangerous back then in the 80’s and 90’s. So sad how things are today. I’m glad I don’t live in California at all now. I hope one day that area finds peace and happiness again.

  45. Long Beach could have been a great city, but the early horrible planning and design has doomed the city, it is way overpopulated, overpriced and under improved! The parking is horrible and the city uses that to take advantage of the citizens! I would never live there again and this doesn’t even factor in the homelessness, its more about the city being a fickin joke!
