A deadly e-bike crash in Burbank is adding urgency to an ongoing debate over electric bike safety across California, including in the Coachella Valley, where residents continue to voice concerns about speeding riders and a lack of regulation.
During The Roggin Report, Fred Roggin highlighted the growing number of serious crashes involving high-speed e-bikes, many of them ridden by teenagers. The discussion followed reports of a fatal collision that left one man dead and a woman seriously injured, raising fresh questions about whether California has waited too long to establish stronger safety rules.
Contributor Jim Walker argued that many of today’s high-speed e-bikes should be treated more like motorcycles than traditional bicycles.
“These are motorcycles,” Walker said. “They’re going more than 30 miles an hour in some cases. They’re on a public street. They’re just as dangerous. They should be subject to the same rules.”
Contributor Drewvy shared a recent close call that nearly resulted in a crash. She described driving when a young rider suddenly pulled out from a sidewalk directly into traffic while looking down at a phone instead of the road.
“I almost hit him with my car because he pulled out of nowhere,” she said, adding that the rider appeared to be distracted by texting.
The conversation quickly shifted to possible solutions. Drewvy suggested California should consider licensing requirements, minimum age limits, and mandatory safety training before riders are allowed to operate high-speed e-bikes. She also emphasized the importance of helmet laws.
Fred Roggin questioned whether parents are fully recognizing the risks associated with today’s powerful electric bikes.
“I don’t think parents are taking the risks seriously enough,” Roggin said, noting that many modern e-bikes can travel at speeds that rival small motorcycles.
As electric bikes continue growing in popularity throughout Southern California, communities across the Coachella Valley are watching the debate closely. With more riders sharing busy roads alongside cars, many believe stronger regulations could help prevent future tragedies while improving safety for everyone.
