San Diego Unified outperforms California in reading, math

The Nation’s Report Card indicates that San Diego Unified surpassed California in both reading and mathematics.

SAN DIEGO — A recent Nation’s Report Card conducted by the U.S. Department of Education has shown that San Diego Unified School District, which is the second largest district in California, ranks among the top-performing urban districts across the nation.

The findings from the 2024 National Assessment of Educational Progress indicated improvements in the fourth-grade math scores since the previous assessment in 2022, as detailed in a press release from the district. Unlike a nationwide trend of declining reading scores, the eighth-grade math and reading scores for both fourth and eighth grades remained largely stable.

According to the press release, the percentage of fourth graders in San Diego Unified who achieved NAEP proficiency increased from 34% in 2022 to 41% in 2024. In reading, their proficiency rose from 37% to 39%. For eighth graders, the NAEP proficiency rates progressed from 28% to 31%, while reading scores improved from 34% to 37%.

Raymond C. Hart, Executive Director of the Council of the Great City Schools, noted that the gains in fourth-grade math scores from 2022 to 2024 were greater than those achieved by the state of California.

“San Diego Unified School District continues to excel in all subject areas tested on the NAEP, outperforming all major cities participating in the Trial Urban District Assessment program for both fourth and eighth grade reading nationally,” Hart stated in the press release.

Hart also mentioned that San Diego Unified ranked second in eighth-grade math scores and sixth in fourth-grade math scores among the Urban District Assessments.

“These results are a testament to the dedication of our students and the support they receive from our district and their families,” said Fabi Bagula, interim superintendent of San Diego Unified School District. “Our educators are making remarkable efforts every day for our students. Their steadfast commitment, expertise, and compassion are the pillars of our shared success… I couldn’t be prouder of the progress we have achieved as a team, but there remains more work ahead.”
