CALLERAN, Sean Timothy, aged 63, passed away on January 3, 2025, in San Diego, CA. A longtime resident of the city, Sean was born on June 24, 1961, in Norfolk, VA. In 1972, his family relocated to Harrisonburg, VA, where he completed his education at Harrisonburg High School. He then attended James Madison University, where he achieved 1st place in the Environmental Art Competition and earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts.
Sean was preceded in death by his elder brother, Jim (Jr.), and is survived by his treasured wife, Susan, along with their two sons, Sean Timothy, Jr. (“Jack”) and Luke Gregory. He is also survived by his parents, James E., Jr. and Saundra S. Calleran of Richmond, VA, as well as siblings: Mark H. Calleran (Michelle) of San Diego, S. Michael Calleran (Laura) of Manakin-Sabot, VA, Margaret C. Clark of Harrisonburg, VA, and Carrie C. Rosenblatt (Charles) of Richmond, VA; in addition to numerous cousins, nieces, and nephews.
Sean’s journey in culinary services began with part-time restaurant jobs during high school and college, leading to a distinguished four-decade career. He held various positions, ranging from line cook to Sous Chef at esteemed restaurants, including The Chart House in Cardiff-by-the-Sea and Croce’s in San Diego’s Gaslamp Quarter.
As his sons grew, Sean opted for a more balanced professional life, shifting to institutional and corporate dining services. He took on leadership roles with contractors at prominent companies like Raytheon and Qualcomm before joining Sodexo Corporation. In his capacity as Lead Cook, he contributed to launching dining services at Sharp Hospital in Chula Vista and later took on the role of Production Manager at Mess Hall 569 at the Marine Corps Recruit Depot, the largest mess hall in the Corps. Due to his dedication, Sean was promoted to General Manager of Mess Hall 620, also located at MCRD.
Apart from his professional accomplishments, Sean’s greatest happiness came from his family. He treasured every moment with Susan and their sons, Jack and Luke. His happiest times were spent with the boys during trips to the zoo, beach days, and walks along the beautiful trails of San Diego, including visits to the Dishwasher Pond to catch and release crawdads.
Sean will be deeply missed by everyone who knew and loved him.
