On Monday, Rep. Mike Garcia acknowledged his defeat and extended his congratulations to political newcomer George Whitesides, who was competing to represent California’s 27th Congressional District.
NBC News reported that Whitesides secured 51.2% of voter support, while the incumbent Garcia garnered 48.8%. By Monday evening, more than 288,000 votes had been tallied.
“I had a conversation with George Whitesides this evening to offer my congratulations, and I will facilitate a seamless transition of ongoing constituent case work packages to him and his team,” Garcia stated.
The district, covering Ventura County and portions of Northern Los Angeles County, including Lancaster, Palmdale, and Santa Clarita, was a target for Democrats seeking to flip the seat.
According to the California Secretary of State, over 40% of registered voters in the district identified as Democrats, whereas 30% identified as Republicans.
Garcia, a former Navy fighter pilot and U.S. defense contractor, transitioned into politics, while Whitesides, who previously served as NASA’s chief of staff, was the CEO of Virgin Galactic.
