AGOURA HILLS, Calif. (KABC) — California is investing an additional $18 million to finalize the world’s largest wildlife crossing located in Agoura Hills.
This week, Governor Gavin Newsom announced the funding for the Wallis Annenberg Wildlife Crossing, designed to ensure safe transit for wildlife across the 101 Freeway.
“The Annenberg Wildlife Crossing is an ambitious initiative that connects conservation efforts with urban growth. The crossing will enhance safety for both wildlife and drivers on US 101 and is a step toward ensuring peaceful coexistence for both humans and animals for future generations,” he stated.
The California Transportation Commission designated the funds from the Environmental Enhancement and Mitigation Program, established in 1989 to support projects that alleviate environmental effects stemming from modifications to transportation facilities, as per the governor’s office.
Upon completion, the overall crossing will be recognized as the largest structure of its kind in the world and will serve as a global example for urban wildlife conservation.

Last year marked a significant milestone for the project with the completion of the structure over the freeway, achieved through the pouring of over 26 million pounds of concrete, finishing vegetated sound walls, and placing planting soils, alongside the installation of natural stone habitat features. The crossing’s name has also been unveiled, visible daily to more than 300,000 commuters on the freeway.
The crossing is projected to be finalized by the fall of 2026.
