April 5th National Protest

April 5th National Protest

A new national day of protest is set to sweep across all 50 states on Saturday, April 5, with demonstrations organized under the banner “Hands Off” targeting perceived threats to democracy, bodily autonomy, and climate justice. Organizers say the protests are a direct response to figures like former President Donald Trump and tech billionaire Elon Musk, accusing them of undermining key democratic principles and freedoms. The April 5 protests are being led by progressive advocacy groups, including Third Act and Reproductive Freedom for All, and are expected to draw thousands of participants. Demonstrations are scheduled in every state, ranging from small town squares to major urban centers, with events timed to coincide with the run-up to key primary contests and ongoing legal battles involving Trump. Organizers are calling the events a defense of democracy and personal freedoms, echoing recent waves of politically charged demonstrations. In recent months, the “50501 protest” mobilized thousands to oppose voter suppression, while other events such as the “Tesla takedown” rallies and “Not My President” marches highlighted corporate accountability and opposition to Trump’s political comeback. Democratic leaders, including Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and Senator Bernie Sanders, have held rallies in cities like Denver and Phoenix, galvanizing support around progressive priorities ahead of the 2024 general election. The “Hands Off” protests are being framed as a broad-based pushback against political and corporate efforts to limit rights. They also signal a continuing pattern of grassroots mobilization seen in other recent national demonstrations.Third Act, a group co-founded by environmentalist Bill McKibben and focused on older Americans engaging in activism, is partnering with other advocacy groups such as Indivisible and MoveOn to lead the protests. A map published by the event’s website, HandsOff2025.com, shows protests stretching from Anchorage, Alaska, to Miami, Florida. Some of the largest gatherings are expected in cities like Washington, D.C., San Francisco, and Philadelphia, while smaller events are planned for college campuses and public squares nationwide.

Distracted Driving Awareness Month Kicks Off in Palm Springs With Emotional Reminder

Distracted Driving Awareness Month Kicks Off in Palm Springs With Emotional Reminder

Distracted Driving Awareness Month officially began today, and in Palm Springs, the Auto Club of Southern California, the California Office of Traffic Safety, and CHP came together at City Hall to launch the “Action Against Distraction” pledge campaign. Among those speaking was Beverly Shelton—affectionately known as “Grandma Beverly.” Her life was forever changed 16 years ago when her 5-year-old grandson, Zachary, was struck and killed by a distracted driver while walking to his school bus. Zachary would have turned 22 this year. “It broke me. And it broke my family,” Shelton shared. “There’s still collateral damage today.” CHP Officer David Torres emphasized that even a one- or two-second distraction behind the wheel can cause irreversible harm. “It could be a life-changing event,” he said. Nine empty chairs stood in silent tribute to the average nine lives lost daily to distracted driving. A nearby table displayed common distractions—phones, food, and makeup—alongside a memorial table filled with Zachary’s favorite things. Shelton’s message was powerful: “Behind the wheel, you’re behind the trigger. Know what’s going on around you.” Explore: NBCPalmSprings.com, where we are connecting the Valley. Source link

Sea Lion Attacks Teen Swimming In Long Beach

Sea Lion Attacks Teen Swimming In Long Beach

LONG BEACH, CA —A teenager was bitten by a sea lion Sunday afternoon while swimming in Long Beach, according to city fire officials. The attack happened around noon while the girl was taking part in tryouts for Long Beach’s junior lifeguard cadet program just west of Junipero Beach. “Out of nowhere, I feel something biting my arm over and over again,” 15-year-old Phoebe Beltran said in a video interview with KTLA. “All I’m thinking is ‘please don’t be a shark, please don’t take off my arm, please don’t kill me.'” Long Beach Fire Department Capt. Jack Crabtree said about a dozen junior lifeguard candidates were swimming about 25 yards off the shore when lifeguards noticed the sea lion acting “aggressive” and biting the girl. “Lifeguards immediately went out to meet the swimmer and assist in bringing her back,” Crabtree said. “The sea lion just left.” The teen was taken by Long Beach Fire Department personnel to a local hospital for non-life-threatening injuries, Crabtree added. Video from KTLA shows Beltran with several bites and scratches along her arm. It’s unclear why the sea lion was acting aggressively. However, experts have reported that sea lions have been falling ill to poisonous algae and becoming “feral,” the Los Angeles Times reported. Fire officials say lifeguard and marine safety personnel conduct an extensive search of the area where tryouts will take place to ensure candidates don’t come in contact with sea life. “This is the first (lifeguards) can recall an incident like this happening,” Crabtree said. The junior lifeguard tryouts, meanwhile, have been postponed to a later date that has yet to be announced, Crabtree said. Source link
