The two-story building boasts an intimate and relaxed vibe, featuring a mid-century modern aesthetic accompanied by a carefully curated playlist that fills the lobby all day long. This charming space offers only 23 guest rooms. Each room is adorned with whitewashed walls, luxurious low-profile beds, and chic vintage furnishings, creating an inviting retreat. Many rooms also showcase delightful outdoor areas—perfect for sipping wine before dinner or unwinding after a busy day. The renovation preserved its original charm while introducing modern elements into its design. The results are delightful. From the lobby’s plush seating to the stylish green and teal bar area, every aspect has been thoughtfully curated. A standout feature is the oyster-shaped pool located directly off the lobby, at the heart of the property. Surrounded by cozy lounge chairs and tables, the pool deck offers a great setting for a leisurely afternoon before heading out for dinner. Ponyboy, part of the new Service Animals hospitality group, takes its name from the lead character in S.E. Hinton’s ‘The Outsiders.’ Image Credit: Kimberly Motos The restaurant spans the lobby, bar area, and pool deck, which features outdoor heaters and a screen for classic movie screenings. This atmosphere is ideal for a memorable date night or a fun group dinner. Under the leadership of Ian Ward and Danny Romero, standout menu items included the Grilled Oysters a la Rockefeller, which were light and creamy, perfectly paired with a glass of wine, and the Fisherman’s Catch Ceviche, served with fennel tortilla chips. However, the dish that truly stole the show was the Juicy Lucy—a wagyu burger bursting with flavor and cheese, topped with okie onions, and it surely deserves viral fame. Balboa Park, featuring the San Diego Natural History Museum, the San Diego Museum of Art, the Air & Space Museum, and many other points of interest, is just a short drive away. Additionally, Liberty Station, a vibrant gathering place for dining, art, and shopping within a former naval base, is close by. The hotel offers guests recommendations for local attractions, including La Playa, Sunset Cliffs Natural Park, Torrey Pines State Natural Reserve, and restaurants like Mitch’s Seafood, Cesarina, and Harbour Town Pub. While this isn’t usually an issue, some traffic noise may occasionally be heard in the guest rooms. Though not a major concern, it is something to consider. Overall, The Pearl presents an excellent option for accommodations. We would certainly revisit this stylish and laid-back establishment that is destined to become a vibrant part of San Diego’s hospitality scene—both for lodging and dining. The vibrant energy of this soon-to-be hotspot, which opened in August, is perfect for unique and trendy dinner outings. Ponyboy operates Wednesday through Sunday from 4 to 5 p.m. for Golden Hour and from 5 to 10 p.m. for dinner. Culinary Offerings: The hotel includes a complimentary “European-style” breakfast with options such as bagels, fruit, yogurt, and more. It also features Ponyboy, the restaurant that debuted in August. Each room comes equipped with a minibar. Neighborhood Recommendations: Ketch Grill and Taps, Eppig Brewing, Cesarina, Portside Coffee and Gelato, and Liberty Station. Amenities: Air conditioning, private outdoor space, pool, walk-in showers, outdoor shower, complimentary breakfast, hair dryer, a partnership with Alo Moves for in-room wellness classes, and discounted access to classes at nearby Pier to Point Wellness & Spa.
