Ballot Boxes Open In Long Beach: Find Yours

LONG BEACH, CA — While all registered voters will have the option to mail in their ballots, you can still drop off your ballot with ease this year at your local ballot box in Long Beach. Ballot boxes opened across California on Tuesday, Oct. 8. Voters have until Nov. 5 at 8 p.m. to get their ballot into a local vote center or ballot box. Ballots going out through the mail can arrive as late as Nov. 12 as long as they are postmarked on or before Election Day. Counties began mailing ballots by Oct. 7 — all active, registered voters are expected to receive a vote-by-mail ballot for the general election. Not sure if you’re registered to vote, or need to change your address? You can find out here and make any changes you may need, as well. Californians need to register to vote by Oct. 21 to vote in the Nov. 5 election. You can also register in person on Election Day for a conditional ballot. Vote centers in Long Beach will be open for early in-person voting beginning Oct. 26. On Election Day, vote centers will be open from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. There are 48 ballot boxes and voting locations in Long Beach including: Bret Harte Neighborhood Library – Open 24 hours for ballot drop off Dana Neighborhood Library – Open 24 hours for ballot drop off Opens Nov. 2-4 for early voting from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. De Forest Park – Open 24 hours for ballot drop off Long Beach City College – Opens Oct. 26 for early voting from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Stearns Champions Park – Open 24 hours for ballot drop off Wardlow Park – Open 24 hours for ballot drop off Opens Nov. 2-4 for early voting from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. All drop off and early voting locations will close at 8 p.m. on election day. PALM SPRINGS, CA — The identity of a motorcyclist who died in an apparent crash with a vehicle near Palm Springs was being withheld Tuesday. The Palm Springs Police Department was notified at approximately 8:15 p.m. Monday of a traffic collision at the intersection of East Palm Canyon Drive and Golf Club Drive, according to a statement from the department. Officers arrived at the scene and found a motorcyclist sprawled in the roadway with “significant injuries,” according to the statement. The Palm Springs Fire Department unsuccessfully attempted life-saving measures as the motorcyclist was pronounced dead on-site. The most recent data indicates that over 75,000 individuals are experiencing homelessness in Los Angeles County, many of whom might not realize they can register to vote, whether at county shelters or online. “What I feel is important for any homeless person is to learn to speak up, you know? That’s why we often seem invisible, because many of us are embarrassed and hesitant to ask for help,” said Justice Butler. The 65-year-old former radio DJ reflects on her experiences of homelessness at different points in her life, from her hometown of Houston to her current residence in a studio apartment near McArthur Park. Regardless of her struggles, her aspiration to participate in the voting process has always remained strong. “It means so much to me each year. The first time I voted, I was emotional, reflecting on the ancestors who paved the way for this right. SAN DIEGO, CA — An extensive workers’ compensation fraud investigation lasting three years has led to charges against four men, one of whom is a neurosurgeon from San Diego, for allegedly billing nearly $100 million in fraudulent fees, according to law enforcement officials. David Fish, 55, from Laguna Niguel; Martin Brill, 78, from Los Angeles; Robert Lee, 61, from Rancho Mirage; and Dr. Vrijesh Tantuwaya, the neurosurgeon in question, are facing 13 felony charges, which include conspiracy and insurance fraud, as reported by authorities. “While families nationwide are grappling with rising costs for essential needs like gas and rent, these criminals exacerbate the financial burden of insurance premiums, pushing the American dream further out of reach for countless hardworking individuals,” stated Orange County District Attorney Todd Spitzer in a news release regarding the charges. According to the news release, insurance fraud costs residents of California an average of $440 annually, manifesting as increased premiums, taxes, and prices. As part of this fraudulent scheme, Fish, Brill, and Lee established a company named Southern California Injured Workers that provided medical management services. They also founded a medical corporation led by Tantuwaya as owner and CEO, called Injured Workers Medical Group, which became the primary client of the management company, as per the news release. The management company utilized the medical group to oversee patient referrals to a restricted network of service providers that contracted their services, according to authorities. Over three years, they allegedly billed approximately $100 million to insurance companies and unlawfully received referral fees from service providers like diagnostic testing labs and compound pharmacies, as detailed in the news release. If found guilty, Fish, previously banned for life from the state workers’ compensation system after two convictions for insurance fraud, could face a sentence of up to 18 years and four months in prison. Tantuwaya could receive a sentence of 13 years and four months, while both Brill and Lee are facing potential sentences of 12 years and four months, according to the news release. Source link
