For this annual event, Washington sent a total of seven crews, comprising four eight-oared teams and three fours. The first and second varsity eights participated in heats, with only the top finishers proceeding to the finals, while the remaining crews competed in preliminary races, successfully advancing to the finals. Notably, two of the five events registered two Washington entries.
In their opening race of the day, the varsity eight Jessop-Whittier Cup heat witnessed a competitive showdown between Washington and their traditional rival, California. Both crews quickly pulled ahead of the field, with the UW eight maintaining the lead throughout.
As the race progressed, California posed a challenge, but Washington held their ground, securing victory by approximately three seats. The Huskies finished with a time of 6:35.693, just over a second ahead of California’s 6:36.847, while third-place Sacramento State trailed by another 30 seconds.
The Karen Plumleigh Cortney Cup, for varsity fours, included eight crews in the preliminary race, with all advancing to the final on Sunday.
During this race, Washington and Texas exchanged the lead, but Texas surged to the forefront in the third 500 meters and maintained their advantage, finishing first with a time of 7:40.687. Washington comfortably secured second place at 7:46.393, finishing six seconds ahead of third-placed California.
The heat for the Jackie Ann Stitt Hungness Trophy, pertaining to second varsity eights, also featured a four-boat field. However, it turned into a two-boat contest, as Washington and California quickly established a significant lead.
Washington led from start to finish, winning the race with a time of 7:00.751, crossing the line ahead of California, which recorded a time of 7:04.622.
The College B 4+ race served as another preliminary, allowing all eight entries to advance to the finals. Washington entered both its second and third varsity fours, mirroring their success from last year, where they finished in the top two spots of this event.
In Saturday’s prelim, both UW crews swiftly moved to the front of the pack, accompanied briefly by a four from California. The three crews maintained their positions throughout the race, with Washington’s second varsity four clinching victory at 8:02.062. California finished second at 8:07.984, while UW’s 3V4+ took third at 8:15.483.
In the last race of the day, Washington’s third and fourth varsity eights competed in the Carley Copley Open 8+ preliminary, which featured six boats. Texas won with a time of 7:15.612, followed by California at 7:24.513. Washington’s third varsity eight finished third at 7:27.521, with the fourth varsity eight coming in fourth at 7:30.549, well ahead of UCLA and UCSD.
On Sunday, Washington will compete for trophies across all five of its categories. The first women’s collegiate grand final, the varsity eight Jessop-Whittier Cup, is scheduled to start at 9:23 a.m. PT.
