A man jumped overboard from a Carnival Cruise ship off the coast of Mexico, prompting an ongoing search by the U.S. Coast Guard and Mexican authorities, officials said Sunday.
The passenger, identified only as a 56-year-old man, was aboard the Carnival Panorama as it sailed from Puerto Vallarta, Mexico, back to Long Beach, California.
According to the U.S. Coast Guard, the Rescue Coordination Center Alameda was notified Saturday afternoon and began coordinating search-and-rescue efforts. Fixed-wing aircraft have been deployed to assist in the search, while the Mexican Navy and commercial vessels in the area are also helping, officials said in a statement.
Carnival Cruise Line said the ship’s crew became aware of the incident after the guest was reported missing. The crew then launched search and investigation procedures, including reviewing surveillance video and notifying U.S. and Mexican authorities.
“Carnival is providing support to the family who was traveling with the guest, and our thoughts and prayers are with them and their loved ones,” the cruise line said in a statement.
The Coast Guard said the search remains ongoing.
The man has not been publicly identified, and additional details were not immediately available.
