LONG BEACH, Calif. — July marks Disability Pride Month, a time to celebrate inclusion while also highlighting the many barriers people with disabilities still face.
One of the biggest issues is one most Angelenos can relate to: housing.
Advocates explain that for people with disabilities, the issue is two-sided. When a home isn’t accessible and affordable, independence is out of reach.
With the demand for accessible housing outpacing supply, the shortage is leading to people living in homes that do not meet their needs.
The state of California says there are programs in place that require 10% to 15% of new state-funded homes to have accessibility features for people with mobility and visual or hearing impairments.
However, a majority of Los Angeles homes were built before any ADA requirements went into effect, leaving much of what is available inaccessible for this community.
