LOS ANGELES, CA — This weekend, traffic will be affected on the 405 Freeway and surrounding roads due to construction, which will close several lanes and ramps of the interstate in the San Fernando Valley starting Friday.
At certain times, one side of the freeway will be entirely closed to all vehicles.
Complete Closure
The northbound 405 will be fully closed between just south of Ventura Boulevard and the 101 Freeway on Saturday, June 6 from 2 to 5 a.m. and again on Monday, June 8 from 12:01 to 5 a.m.
Traffic will be redirected off the freeway just north of the Sepulveda Pass and through the streets of the San Fernando Valley before being led back onto the freeway further north.
Weekend Closures
Additional closures will take place continuously from 10 p.m. Friday, June 5 to 6 a.m. Monday, June 8:
- The northbound lanes will be narrowed to two lanes from just south of Ventura Boulevard to the 101.
- The connector from southbound 101 to northbound 405 will be closed.
- The Greenleaf Street on-ramp to the northbound 405 will be closed.
- The northbound 405 off-ramp to Getty Center Drive will be closed.
Officials have advised drivers to consider these alternate routes:
During the complete overnight closures: For the northbound 101 connector — Take the northbound 405 connector to the northbound 101 and exit at Hayvenhurst Avenue. Go north on Hayvenhurst and east on Burbank Boulevard to access the northbound 405 on-ramp.
Using the southbound 101 connector — Take the northbound 405 connector to the southbound 101 and exit at Van Nuys Boulevard. Proceed north on Van Nuys and west on Burbank Boulevard to turn onto the northbound 405 on-ramp.
From southbound 101 to northbound 405: Travel south on the 405 and exit at Ventura Boulevard. Go east on Ventura, north on Sepulveda Boulevard, and west on Burbank Boulevard to the northbound 405 on-ramp.
The closures coincide with further closures on the 101 Freeway this week, which will see the freeway narrowed to one lane in each direction at times.
Construction has been ongoing on the 405 Freeway in and around the Sepulveda Pass since June as part of the I-405 Pavement Rehabilitation Project, a $143.7 million initiative aimed at enhancing safety and mobility along the freeway while extending the lifespan of its pavement, according to Caltrans.
Most related road closures occur overnight. However, significant traffic disruptions have resulted from what Caltrans refers to as Extended Weekend Closures — periods when crews close lanes and/or ramps on Friday night, keeping them shut until Monday morning.
These weekend closures will occur approximately every other week — or twice a month.
Caltrans hasn’t established a detailed schedule for each weekend closure, but they indicated there will be around 25 total weekend closures.
