Dallas Mavericks vs. Los Angeles Lakers prediction, pick for Sunday 4/5/26

Alex Hunter offers his insights, forecasts, and selections for the upcoming NBA face-off between the Mavericks and the Lakers this Sunday.

The Mavericks will host the Lakers on Sunday. At DraftKings Sportsbook, Los Angeles is favored by 1.5 points, with the total set at 233.5 points.

Let’s explore my analysis and prediction for this contest.

Preview: Mavericks vs. Lakers

This is the fourth and concluding contest of the season between the Mavericks and the Lakers. Los Angeles holds a 3-0 advantage in this season series, with two victories coming by double digits, including a recent 20-point win on February 12th.

The Mavericks, with a record of 24-52, are positioned 13th in the Western Conference and were knocked out of playoff contention two weeks ago. Conversely, the 50-27 Lakers are the No.3 seed, barely half a game ahead of the Nuggets, and will strive for a win in this game.

However, the Lakers have recently faced a barrage of injuries. Luka Doncic has been diagnosed with a Grade 2 hamstring strain, and Austin Reeves has an oblique issue. Both players have been sidelined for the rest of the regular season, raising concerns about their playoff availability.

Since the All-Star break, the Lakers have a record of 17-9 and rank ninth in net rating, but the absence of Reaves and, more critically, Doncic has significant implications for the team’s performance. Doncic is leading the NBA with an average of 34.7 points per game since the All-Star break. The Lakers have played one game this season without both Doncic and Reaves and suffered a loss to the Trail Blazers in Portland, finishing 132-116.

Marcus Smart was the team’s leading scorer in that loss with 25 points but will also miss tonight’s game due to an ankle injury. This puts a considerable amount of responsibility on LeBron James, who is expected to have a standout performance. With Doncic, Reaves, and Smart off the court this season, James’ usage increases by 6.9 percentage points to 34%, and his assist rate jumps 14.6 percentage points to 46.8%.

However, where the Lakers will find additional scoring beyond James remains uncertain. Deandre Ayton, Rui Hachimura, and Jake LaRavia will see enhanced roles and have the potential to step up, but their inconsistency is a concern. Los Angeles displays a poor -11.7 net rating per 100 possessions when Doncic, Reaves, and Smart are off the floor. Nonetheless, this matchup against a faltering Mavericks team presents an opportunity for the Lakers, especially with Dallas already eliminated from playoff contention.

Since the All-Star break, the Mavericks hold a 5-18 record and rank 26th in net rating. Cooper Flagg recently scored 51 points against the Magic on Friday, yet Dallas still lost the game by 11 points, marking their 14th consecutive home loss.

The Mavericks’ situation has not been encouraging, but Flagg is expected to remain aggressive as he makes a late push for Rookie of the Year. At DraftKings Sportsbook, Flagg’s odds for the award are +230, trailing his former Duke teammate Kon Knueppel, who stands at -330.

Mavericks vs. Lakers: Prediction and Best Bet

Despite the Lakers’ injury challenges, they must secure a victory, while the Mavericks have struggled significantly of late, particularly at home.

James is likely to lead Los Angeles to a win, making the Lakers -1.5 a solid wager. As favorites this season, the Lakers are 30-17 against the spread.

Best Bet: Lakers -1.5 (-110)
