Have you herd? Grazing goats returning Glendale – NBC Los Angeles

Grazing goats are coming back to Glendale this week as part of the city’s ongoing wildfire prevention efforts.

Starting Wednesday, a herd hired through California Grazing will spend about a week clearing 20 acres of dry brush on the Verdugo Park hillsides, including the slopes that lead towards homes on Las Flores Drive.

This early action is in response to the unusually heavy rainfall the area has experienced in recent months, which has promoted vegetation growth in the wildland-urban interface. The city plans to bring in additional herds later this summer to manage the rapidly increasing fuels.

The goat grazing is a key part of the Glendale Fire Department’s extensive Vegetation Management Program, which also encompasses mechanical brush clearance, inspections, and community collaboration to lower wildfire risks.

Over 270 goats and several sheep will be tasked with consuming hazardous fire fuels. Tracey Leong reports for NBC4 News at 4 p.m. on Thursday, July 11, 2024.
